Progressive Worship Spotlight: Build My Life

This just might be my song of the year.

Choosing songs is often a tedious process. You know my rubric. So to find a song that ticks so many boxes can be a real uplifting feeling. The magic of Build My Life is three-fold.

  1. Singable as heck – I am equally annoyed by “catchy songs with patriarchal language” and “progressive songs that are unsingable”. This melody is undeniably catchy and will be easy for your congregation to pick up.
  2. Genderless God – While “God as Father” language can be a beautiful thing in worship, God is more than a male father figure. This song is gender-free, and yet specific enough to know we’re singing to Jesus. A thing of beauty.
  3. A specific ask – This song asks something of God: to open our eyes in wonder, to show us who She is, fill us with the compassion of Her heart, and lead us to share that love with others. This song is great as a general worship song, but it’s powerful accompanying themes of justice and inclusion.

Take a look at these lyrics:

Worthy of all the praise we could ever bring
Worthy of every song we could ever sing
Worthy of every breath we could ever breathe
We live for you

Jesus, the name above every other name
Jesus, the only one who could ever save
Worthy of every breath we could ever breathe
We live for you

Holy, there is no one like you
There is none beside you
Open up my eyes in wonder, and
Show me who you are and fill me
With your heart and lead me
In your love for those around me

Jesus, the name above every other name
Jesus, the only one who could ever save
Worthy of every breath we could ever breathe
We live for you

I will build my life upon your love
It is a firm foundation
I will put my trust in you alone
And I will not be shaken

Here’s my favorite version of this song:

Really fascinating leading style by Brittany Mondesir. Understated, yet very powerful. So good!

Get worshiping, my friends!
